Practical pH, copper and zinc tester
The PoolTest PT400 tablet tester from German brand Water I.D. provides reliable pH measurements (6.8–8.2 pH) and free copper measurements (0–0.9 mg/l), while a simple calculation also gives the zinc concentration. Three chambers allow parallel or sequential testing, saving time during regular pool maintenance.
Everything in one pack
The box includes the tester, 20 Phenol Red tablets, 20 tablets of Copper/Zinc LR, 20 tablets of Phenol Red Rapid, 20 tablets of EDTA, 20 tablets of Dechlor and a plastic rod. Remove the lid, collect a water sample, mix in the crushed tablet and read the colour after one minute.
Easy use without electricity
Unlike electronic pH meters, there are no batteries or calibration to worry about. The PT400 uses visual colour comparison, with a high-contrast scale that is easy to read in daylight.
Differential method for zinc
Determine zinc by subtracting two readings: first Cu + Zn, then Cu alone after adding EDTA and Phenol Red Rapid. The difference gives the zinc concentration without an expensive photometer.
How to test correctly
Take the sample 20 cm below the surface and away from return jets. If free chlorine exceeds 1 mg/l, use a Dechlor tablet first. Rinse after every measurement so reagent residues do not affect subsequent tests.

Remove the tester lid to access the chambers.
2 ) Measuring pH
- Fill the left chamber to the mark.
- Add 1 Phenol Red tablet and stir until dissolved.
- The colour stabilises within 10 s. Hold the tester at eye level and compare with the scale (6.8–8.2).

5 ) Tips for accurate results
- Take the sample 20 cm below the surface, away from return jets.
- Wash the chambers thoroughly after each test.
- Store tablets in a cool, dry place; open blisters immediately before use.
- Always use Dechlor when chlorine levels are high.
- If the colour has not changed after 1 minute, wait no more than another 30 s.
6 ) Safety
- Tablets must not be swallowed. Keep out of reach of children!
- Handle with dry hands to prevent premature dissolution.
- Used solutions may be poured down the drain; they do not contain hazardous concentrations of metals.
