Floating and non-floating pool thermometers
A pool thermometer shows the water temperature at the point where it is placed. For everyday use, the main considerations are a clear scale and a position that makes it easy to take a reading.
Simple thermometers with a tether
The thermometer with a float is 18 cm long and stays near the surface. Its cord lets you secure it so it does not drift out of reach.
The non-floating thermometer is 17 cm long. It is designed to hang in the water, so its placement differs from a floating model. Floating versions with a duck, turtle and other designs are also available.
Taking a temperature reading
After placing the thermometer in the water, allow it to settle for the time specified in its instructions. Temperature can differ between the surface and deeper water, or near a heated water inlet. Measuring under similar conditions makes readings easier to compare throughout the season.
A thermometer does not heat the water or control pool equipment. Position it so it does not get in the way of swimming or cleaning.
